Here’s why you should not neglect drinking lots of water every day!
In continuation of my Q and A session with Jennifer Bryant, registered dietician, and certified diabetic educator, specializing in weight management, I asked Jennifer to answer the question why as she suggest eating another one of her top ten foods. This week she dives into the reasons why she also suggests water, a lot of water, should be apart of your daily diet and how much you need. To recap from previous weeks and/or to read Jennifer’s 10 foods with examples click here.
DID YOU KNOW:
Every person needs half of their body weight in ounces of water every day!
WHY:
Water has many important functions. It helps dissolve and transport nutrients throughout our bodies, and helps them be absorbed. Water helps us maintain body temperature, and it protects and lubricates our tissues. Along with water we need proper amounts of sodium, potassium, chloride, and phosphorus. These are our primary electrolyte, which, along with water, help us maintain fluid balance. It is important to drink enough water to help your body’s metabolism work properly.
Here is something else you may not know:
One major reason people experience dizziness, fatigue, nausea, or light-headedness when they reduce their caloric intake or go on a “diet” is because they have reduced their sodium intake significantly also without realizing it. A dramatic decrease in sodium and an increase in water can cause a fluid imbalance that leads to these symptoms. People believe that they are not eating enough, when in fact the symptoms are due to lack of sodium. Keep in mind that sodium is a necessary nutrient, but it is true that too much can be harmful to health, just like most things. Maintain a sodium intake of 1500-2400mg daily, and you will be meeting your requirement, but not getting too much.
